Vallejo sits on a waterfront, Mare Island Strait to the west, San Pablo Bay to the south. That geography means the city has always had a resident rat population around the port, warehouses, and storm drains. When food or shelter gets scarce at ground level, rats migrate into homes.
The city’s housing stock accelerates the problem. Most of Old Town and East Vallejo was built in the 1950s–70s, decades before the tighter building envelopes that are standard today. Foundation sill plates have gaps. Crawl space vents rust out. Eave boards shrink and split. Every one of those openings is an invitation.
How we eliminate rodents
- Inspection: we walk the perimeter and check the crawl space and attic for active sign (droppings, gnaw marks, runways, rub marks). This tells us what species, where they’re entering, and how active the infestation is.
- Trapping: snap traps placed along travel routes inside the structure. More effective and faster than bait stations indoors.
- Exterior bait stations: tamper-resistant bait stations placed at perimeter and near entry points to knock down outdoor population.
- Exclusion: we seal confirmed entry points with hardware cloth, copper mesh, and caulk. No exclusion = rodents come back.
- Follow-up: we return in 7–10 days to clear traps and verify activity has stopped.
Why traps alone aren’t enough
Rodents breed fast. A pair of Norway rats can produce 40–60 offspring per year under good conditions. A single mouse can have 5–10 litters of 5–6 pups per year. Store-bought traps and bait work on a small scale, but they don’t address the entry points or the outdoor population that keeps feeding replacements into the structure.
Rats and mice also carry hantavirus, leptospirosis, and fleas. Attic droppings accumulate and degrade insulation. The longer an infestation runs, the higher the remediation cost.
Rodent service pricing
- Rodent treatment + exclusion (most homes): $350–$600
- Attic cleanout + insulation replacement (if heavily contaminated): $800–$2,500 depending on attic size
- Ongoing quarterly exterior service: $80–$120/quarter to maintain pressure on the outdoor population
Older homes in Old Town, East Vallejo, and North Vallejo typically have more entry points and run toward the higher end of the initial treatment range.
Rodent Control — common questions
- What kind of rodents are getting into Vallejo homes?
- Mostly Norway rats and roof rats. Norway rats burrow under slabs and foundations, common in East and Old Town Vallejo near the waterfront. Roof rats climb into attics through gaps in eaves and roof lines. Mice are also common, especially in older homes with gaps in the foundation sill.
- How do I know if it's rats or mice?
- Rat droppings are 3/4 inch or larger and blunt-ended. Mouse droppings are smaller (1/4 inch) and pointed. Scratching sounds at night in the attic or walls usually mean roof rats. Gnawed food packaging in cabinets is typically mice.
- How much does rodent control cost in Vallejo?
- A full rodent treatment with snap traps and exterior exclusion typically runs $350–$600 for most homes. Attic cleanout and re-insulation (when droppings contaminate the insulation) is additional. We quote on-site after the inspection.
- Do you handle exclusion, meaning sealing the entry points?
- Yes. Trapping without exclusion is a temporary fix. We locate and seal the gaps that let rodents in: foundation vents, gaps around pipes, chewed eave openings. Exclusion is included in our rodent service, not an add-on.
- Is it safe to stay in the house during treatment?
- Yes. We use snap traps and exterior bait stations, not broadcast rodenticide indoors. You don't need to leave during treatment.
